  • stonegate arts: holiday crafting - youth eligible

    Celebrate the holiday season with fun and creative arts activities in this 1-day hands-on class for youths (ages 5+) and adults! We'll explore a variety of mediums as we create festive decorations and crafting projects that will be sure to spread holiday cheer. No experience is required for this class, which is perfect for beginners, DIY enthusiasts, and artists of all levels looking to join in the fun. By the end of this class, you will have a collection of handcrafted holiday treasures to decorate your home and share with family and friends!

    Supplies: All supplies are provided, as well as cookies and hot chocolate.

    NOTE: This workshop is open to youth participants (ages 5+). Youth participants must be accompanied by an authorized adult during the class who is also a registered participant and must have completed our Youth Participation Form.

Littles, kids, and teens will work with professional instructors to explore their creative talents in a range of classes and camps hosted throughout the year.

    acting for middles: Alien invasion - GRADES 6-8

    From Star Wars to E.T. to Dune, Acting for Middles: Alien Invasion is a fast-paced and fun introduction to acting that will use scenes from popular kids' alien-genre movies to focus on the building blocks of acting techniques, including voice and speech development, creative movement, and exploration of character. Through collaborative scene study, students will emerge from the class more articulate, engaged, and confident performers. This class is perfect for beginners, as well as acting students with some experience.

    short film project for middles - GRADES 6-8

    Jump into a full-scale short film production with Constellation Stage & Screen's Short Film Project for 6th-8th graders! This immersive, experiential, project-based learning environment will give young filmmakers the opportunity to work on a safe, fun, and collaborative film set.

    Filmmakers will learn and actively participate in each stage of film production:

    Pre-Production: In this 5-week phase, students will get a “writer’s room” experience--a collaborative space where the groundwork for creative ideas comes together. Students will learn world-building by exploring and incorporating elements of screenwriting. Next, filmmakers will go through visual pre-production, shot lists, scheduling, and casting.

    Production: In this full-day phase (Saturday, December 2, 10am - 6pm), each student filmmaker will get a professionally guided hands-on experience to make their story come to life. They will learn how to effectively communicate as actors and filmmakers, rotate through crew positions, and practice industry-standard set operations.

    Post-Production: In the final 2 project sessions, filmmakers will collaborate through the post-production and editing process and will complete their short film on the final day of the project. 

    Each filmmaker will have the chance to rotate through a variety of film set positions both in front of and behind the camera. Come ready to find your creative voice!

    musical theater playground: frozen forever! - GRADES k-2

    Theater Playground: Frozen Forever! is is an introduction to theater arts for Littles (grades K-2nd) and will explore the imaginative, magical, and wintery world of Frozen! Students will explore characters, songs, scenes, and dances from Frozen, Frozen Forever, Olaf's Frozen Adventure, and Frozen 2, in a fun, dynamic, and interactive learning environment. The class will also implement confidence-building theatre games and improvisation activities to spark creative thinking, promote active listening, and encourage self-expression.

  • Painting in Oil for Impatient & Hesitant Beginners

    In this step-by-step painting class for beginners, we will take a hands-on approach that is heavy on results: you will be in the middle of your first painting and picking up tricks-of-the-trade before you know it. Much of the instruction is individualized. These classes are also designed to accommodate repeat students, so continuing education can be a lifelong experience. Acrylic painters welcome.

    drawing: light & shade

    This 8-week class will focus on making the appearance of realistic form in drawings through depicting areas of light and shade. In developing this skill, through practice, you can add a satisfying, convincing quality to your artwork.

    In this class we will work from direct observation of still life using soft graphite pencils, and we will discuss differences between using light and shade and other systems for modeling form, using examples from art history and contemporary practice. We will also discuss optional skill building exercises to do outside of class. Throughout the class we will repeat procedures, building or reinforcing patience, to help students begin to make this wonderful skill set their own.

    This class may be useful for students who are exploring making art for fun or recreation, or for those with potential professional aspirations.  In order to get the most out of the class students should have experience taking a beginning drawing class and some familiarity with the practices of proportional measuring and construction line drawing. These practices are covered in the Center for Lifelong Learning’s Beginning Drawing class offered during the first eight weeks of the fall semester.

    Painting from Photographs & Imagination in Oil

    Do you have personal photographs or drawings you would like to see as paintings? Or maybe you want to paint in a particular style? Would you like to learn how to paint in your own style better? Michael’s individual-based method is geared towards the personal needs of his students and emphasizes results. This class will cover various topics in oil painting including glazing, scumbling, and under-painting. It will also include discussion about textural versus flat paints, as well as soft versus hard edge mixing. These classes accommodate new and repeat students, as continuing education is a lifelong experience. Acrylic and mixed media artists are welcome.

    From the Eye to the Easel

    Nature has a simple way of putting things together. Once you learn her tricks, you will have a way of understanding any creative project you will want to tackle. For the beginning painter, the first thing you learn is to let the brush do the work for you. Painting is a right-brain activity: once you get in the zone, your blood pressure drops, and the painting practically paints itself. Once you let the right brain take over, space, color, light, and form will become second nature.

    learn how to paint native trees in watercolor

    In this hands-on workshop, MarySue Schwab will demonstrate key approaches to painting native Indiana trees. Students will be instructed in multi-layered, wet-on-wet techniques using watercolor processes to create both subtle and dramatic tree formations. You will learn to use a mixture of warm and cool greens and how to juxtapose shadow and form. Students are encouraged to bring a reference such as a photo for their own piece. This workshop is open to students of all levels, and each will receive individual attention.

    During the workshop, Julie Roberts from Canopy Bloomington will lead a short presentation on the importance of native trees in the landscape.

    MarySue Schwab studied art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and has continued her education in San Francisco and at the New York Art Students’ League. MarySue has worked as a graphic designer and transitioned into a career as an art instructor. Her paintings have hung in many galleries and museums across the country. She is a signature member of the Indiana Watercolor Society and the Bloomington Watercolor Society, and a member of the Ohio Watercolor Society and Indiana Plein Air Association as well as a founding member of the Upland Plein Air Society.   • Beginning Ceramics: Wheel Throwing

    For true beginners curious about ceramics or students with some experience looking to rediscover their skills with clay, this 8-week class will take you through the fundamental techniques of working with clay on the wheel. Students will learn to throw from beginner forms (pulling cylinders) and expand to things that interest them! Bowls, cups, mugs, plates, teapots, vases, planters, etc. We will work towards personal goals of the student while improving technique and gaining information regarding throwing itself.     Advanced Ceramics Study

    This course is designed for experienced CLL students to have the freedom to explore the wheel and beyond without the structure of a traditional class. Under the supervision of your instructor, you will have time reserved in the studio in addition to open studio hours to build on the skills you’ve gained in beginner and experienced level classes toward individual goals and projects. This class will be supervised by instructor Scott Barton, who will help shape and support your experience in this course, while emphasizing the freedom to explore and providing feedback toward your progression.

  • adding meaning with mending

    Mending is an art form as old as fiber arts itself, though today few people still practice. There is a phenomenon that happens though, when you put your own time and effort into mending a textile or garment. Not only do you add longevity to its life, you also imbue it with a sense of importance by adding a bit of yourself to the piece. In this class, we will learn ways to repair an array of pieces, whether woven or knit, by apply patches, darning, embroidering, etc. You will be asked to bring in your own pieces to work on, along with your creativity!

  • beginning/intermediate photoshop [virtual]

    Do you wish your photographs looked better than they do straight from the camera? Maybe there's something you didn't at all mean to be in the photograph, or the color is not as great as you expected, or it's too dark, or the sky is just plain blah? The magic of Adobe Photoshop can fix all that and much more. In this course you will learn many ways to significantly improve your photographs and, beyond that, to create dramatic variations, incorporate new elements by using layers (the sky would look great with some birds in it?), add self-mats for a finished look, and create your own greeting cards with whatever you want to say written right on the picture.

    NOTE: This is a hands-on course. It is recommended that students have the latest version of Adobe Photoshop on their home computers (available here) and will be provided with photographs to work on and detailed handouts.

  • bluegrass slow jam

    Are you a beginning or intermediate player of bluegrass music and want to begin playing with others, but haven’t found a jam that plays at your speed and/or skill level? If so, this is a class for you. This class will focus on songs that are often played in bluegrass jams. Students will be able to select and practice songs that will be played before each session. This class will cover various aspects of jamming such as: playing through mistakes, using chord structure to play (fake) leads and backup to songs you don’t know, responsibilities of someone who leads a song in a jam, singing even if you don’t sing, among other topics.

    NOTE: Students must provide their own instrument for the class. Students must also have at least a beginner level knowledge of their instrument and be able to play the major chords along with the following: Am, D7th, and Em. Most songs will be played at speeds between 70 - 90 BPM.  Students of all ages are encouraged to enroll.

  • mindful movement: relax, recharge, renew [learn anywhere - in-person or virtual]

    Mindful Movement is based in the ancient practice of Qigong and has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Low/no impact, slow and easy to follow repetitive movements soothe the mind, nourish the soul and refresh internal energy. In this course, participants will learn to identify and "feel" their Qi (their unique energy) and through Mindful Movement practice may help them relax, reduce stress, increase energy, gain a better sense of balance and overall well-being.

    Please note that this Qigong series will be taught as all standing. Movements can be modified for sitting. Participants may wish to consult with their physician prior to taking this class if they have any medical issues.

    basic beginner backpacking

    This class will be designed for beginner skill levels of backpacking, those that have never been or who have only ever camped out of their car. Day one will be how to plan a trip, where to go, how far to hike, permits, determining trail difficulty, and understanding the regulations for the area as well as plant and animal considerations, safety and leave no trace principles, and etiquette on the trail and at camp. Day two we will also discuss essential gear and the difference between gear for locations and different times of year along with how to pack your backpack. The third day of class will focus on how to pick a campsite, safety considerations, hygiene in the back county, along with discussing the 10 essentials of hiking, and day hiking or basecamp hiking. We will also discuss navigation skills and map reading. (No equipment needed, this is a class room style learn opportunity.

    NOTE: No equipment needed as this is a classroom style learning opportunity and will take place at the Ivy Tech Main Campus for the first two classes. The third class will take place at Morgan Monroe State Forest for a hike, though we will not be camping. More details on that hike will be provided during the first class.

  • homesteading: ruminants, sheep, goats, & cows [learn anywhere - in-person or virtual]

    Ruminants, sheep, goats, and cows are the focus of this 5-week class geared toward the small farming operation. Learn from lifetime farmer Bill Pursell about the different breeds of dairy, meat, and fiber producing animals; housing, disease and predator control; pasture management; and feeds and feeding. Bill also brings his extensive experience to bear on the business-related side of farming, examining marketing, basic management, record keeping, and legislative issues.

    The final class meeting will be a field trip to the instructor's farm or another location to be determined.

    NOTE: This class will be held in-person at the Ivy Tech Bloomington Main Campus in a Learn Anywhere classroom that also accommodates live instruction for those who wish to attend virtually. All students will have the opportunity to participate and may attend either in-person or virtually via Zoom each class as needed.

    Do you dream of being on stage in the next big musical? Want to nail that next audition? Do you struggle with knowing what to sing? Do you just want to have fun belting out your favorite show tunes? If you answered “yes” to any of the above, then this class is for you! 

    For budding performers with some singing experience to accomplished performers with a long resume, this 6-week workshop is geared towards audition technique and exploring and building musical theatre repertoire (although all genres of music are welcome). You will be able to experiment with new material or fine-tune songs that are already in your repertoire. 

    You will also: 

    • be given song suggestions that are appropriate to age and type, and will subsequently learn how to pick material for yourself
    • learn how to build and organize your audition book
    • work on audition technique, including how to enter the room, talk to the accompanist, and present your material
    • receive acting and musical guidance to help shape your performance, focusing on techniques of musical storytelling
    • analyze song structure and explore given circumstances
    • practice interpreting the lyric, both musically and dramatically
    • build skills in vocal projection, articulation, intonation, physicality, character development, and stage presence
    • learn how to critique your peers in a positive, constructive way
    • gain overall confidence in performance skills

    PREREQUISITE: Some singing experience (examples: voice lessons; school/church/community choirs; talent shows; school/community stage productions/concerts/showcases; summer camps, etc.)

  • The Ivy Tech Center for Lifelong Learning is proud to partner with Constellation Stage & Screen, who offer an exciting lineup of film, theater, and musical theater programs for all ages! Students will work with professional instructors to explore their creative talents in a range of programs hosted throughout the year.

    acting for adults: "Best play" scene study

    Constellation's Acting for Adults; Scene Study curriculum is adapted from a variety of master teachers and acting traditions. Students will engage in collaborative acting exercises to help develop and sharpen their actor toolkit (body, voice, breath) and will use scripted scenes from Tony-nominated "Best Plays" as "acting laboratories" to build upon the following skills:

    • identifying given circumstances
    • character analysis
    • script/scene analysis
    • improvisation
    • presence

    Students will leave the class more competent and confident performers.

    PREREQUISITE: Some acting experience preferred. 

    NOTE: Constellation Stage & Screen programs are not eligible for Ivy Tech Employee Fee Remission.
