Ivy+ Textbooks

Ivy+ Textbooks

What is textbooks?

Textbooks means all required textbooks are one low-cost, predictable price for all eligible students*. Avoid expensive, out-of-pocket costs with a model designed to save you time, money, and hassle. No more questioning the cost of books! Beginning in Fall 2023, eligible students will be assessed the $17 per credit hour Textbook Fee.

*Dual credit, KLLM, skills training (non-credit), and building/construction trade apprenticeship students are excluded from the Ivy+ Textbooks model.

THE BENEFITS & VALUE OF TEXTBOOKS

  1. Student Success: Students will have day-one access to required digital textbooks through the Ivy+
bookshelf in IvyLearn. Day one access guarantees students are equipped to succeed in their courses.
  2. Seamless Student Experience: Instead of shopping around for textbooks and pricing information, Textbooks provides day-one access to all required course materials directly in IvyLearn in a seamless experience.
  3. Student Flexibility: Textbooks is a digital-first model, but students who prefer physical copies can purchase low-cost print (or looseleaf print) options at any Ivy Tech bookstore.
  4. Significant Cost Savings: The 2023-24 Textbook Fee will be $17 per credit hour saving students money on required course materials.
  5. Predictability: Instead of wondering how much textbooks will cost each semester, Textbooks offers one flat per-credit-hour fee making textbook costs predictable.

* Some exclusions apply, including dual credit, KLLM students, skills training (non-credit), and building and construction trade apprenticeships.

Available Textbook Formats

The $17 Textbook Fee includes the cost of all required digital textbooks. If a required textbook is not offered in digital format, students will receive a physical textbook rental. Even with digital textbooks, students still have access to looseleaf print (also called low-cost print) options. Course materials that are recommended but not required, program fees, course fees, and other consumable fees (e.g., exam fees, proctoring fees, nursing scrubs, welding rods) are not included in .

In partnership with Barnes & Noble, Ivy Tech bookstores are the authorized source for your required textbooks, course materials, recommended study aids, school supplies, educationally discounted software, spirit wear, and more!

  • Yes. Textbooks is a digital-first model, but if you prefer print textbooks, you will still have access to looseleaf print (also called low-cost print) options when available. You have the flexibility to choose the format that’s best for you.

  • In accordance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) and in conjunction with Barnes & Noble, Ivy Tech's class schedule search now includes the following textbook information:

    • ISBN
    • Author
    • Publisher
    • Prices (retail, used and rental when available)

For some courses, the textbook page will display "To Be Determined". This would be used in situations when a textbook adoption has not been submitted for a particular course.

    Where to find book information:

    1. Textbook information can be accessed here or via the Course Search link on the Student Dashboard in MyIvy.
    2. Select a term.
    3. Select a subject and any other options. Scroll down and click the Class Search button when done.
    4. Course sections matching your search criterion will be displayed. Click on a course section.
    5. Click the View Textbook Information button.
  • Digital textbooks are available through your IvyLearn dashboard. Simply click on an eBook or select digital content in IvyLearn to access it. If an access code is required, a pop-up window will appear to prompt you to enter the code to access. Features such as highlighting, read aloud, and note-taking, will vary based on the publisher and digital platform.

Quick guides and video tutorials are also available in IvyLearn, and knowledge base articles in MyIvy provide more information about using digital textbooks.

  • If a textbook is being offered digitally,  you can still purchase a looseleaf print (also called low-cost print) version. Prices will vary by publisher. You can order physical books in the BNC Student Experience Portal and either pick them up at your local bookstore or have them shipped directly to you. If a looseleaf print option is unavailable, you can work with your campus bookstore for an alternative print option.

  • Yes. With Textbooks, print textbooks are available as rentals which can either be returned or purchased at the end of a term. You will receive an email from Barnes & Noble before the end of the term with instructions for either option. Purchase prices are discounted and vary by publisher. Materials such as lab manuals and workbooks are considered single-use items and do not need to be returned.

  • You will receive email instructions from Barnes & Noble before books are due. You can return rental textbooks two ways:

    • In the mail: Barnes & Noble emails include a shipping label, which can be printed and used to mail books back to one of the 22 campus bookstore locations.
    • At the bookstore: Bring textbooks to any Ivy Tech Barnes & Noble Bookstore and follow signage to the drop-off location. If your campus does not have a bookstore, Barnes & Noble will designate a space with drop-off times and details.
  • The deadline to return all rental textbooks is the end of the 8-week term or 16-week semester based on the length of the course. You will receive email reminders about the rental deadline to your ivytech.edu email.

  • You are required to return any rental textbooks. A hold will be placed on your Ivy Tech student account that may prevent registration until you either return the materials or pay the replacement cost. To remove your Textbook Rental Hold, please take the following actions:

    1. Return your material: Students can return their Textbook Rental to any Ivy Tech bookstore location. Students can also return materials via shipping. For shipping details, please contact your local bookstore for instructions.
    2. Pay your hold balance: Students can pay the remaining balance for their unreturned Textbook Rentals directly with Barnes & Noble. For balance details and to pay the balance, please contact your local bookstore.
    3. Purchase your textbook rental: Students can also purchase their rented textbook at a discounted price by working directly with the bookstore. Please contact your local bookstore for instructions on purchasing your textbook rental.
  • Digital textbooks are the recommended option for materials in a continuous class. If the material is not available in digital format, a print rental will be provided. You can use the same book for two consecutive 8-week classes falling within the same 16-week semester. Books are rented on an 8-week term or 16-week semester basis. Materials such as lab manuals and workbooks are considered single-use items and do not need to be returned.

  • Approximately 24 hours after making a schedule change, you will receive an email to your ivytech.edu email from the bookstore with instructions and next steps. If you have withdrawn from a course that uses printed materials, you will be directed to return those materials to the bookstore in unopened packages. If adding a class, you will be directed to confirm your new materials for the course and select shipping or in-store pickup.

  • Yes. If you have financial aid available, it can be used in the bookstore, either in-store or on the Barnes & Noble website. Any financial aid (e.g., Pell grant, state financial aid, student loans, other grants, scholarships, etc.) will be applied to your tuition and required fees first. You can still use remaining financial aid for any other materials or supplies at the bookstore at Barnes & Noble pricing.

  • For questions about the BNC Student Portal, contact the Barnes & Noble team.

  • Textbooks is the best way to ensure you have day-one access to all required course materials and at the lowest possible price. Beginning in Fall 2023, eligible* students will be assessed the Textbook Fee. Eligible students will have the opportunity to opt-out, but it is not recommended. Students who choose to opt out will be responsible for finding and purchasing their own textbooks prior to the start of class, including all digital courseware the instructor may require. Digital courseware may include access to quizzes, supplemental text materials, required assignments, course notes, or other activities. Failure to purchase the required course materials, including digital courseware, prior to the start of class could negatively impact your course success. Students can opt-out 30 days prior to the start of the semester and through the 100% refund date of a students’ earliest starting class.
